Music Education for Parents: Teaching Kids Music and Keeping Them Motivated


It is very important to try to avoid instilling this attitude on your children, "I don't want to go to work but I do".  On the surface it may sound like a simple high quality work ethic, and you probably heard it from your parents, but it really does not work on children.

If you are teaching kids music this is certainly not the way to keep them motivated.  As adults we must work to earn money to live.  When teaching kids music you must remember your child does not need to practice music to live.

There is a very limited time and place to focus on teaching kids music by force and by all means, do it when needed, but that should be the exception and not the norm.  If your child is happy they will stay motivated and study their lessons with interest.

The motivation element of teaching kids music rests almost 100% on the parents and teacher.  When teaching kids music, especially when they are young (age 5 or 6) they have a very high level of respect for their parents and teachers.  Many times they may even have more respect for the teacher than the parents.


If you are openly proud of your child, they will stay motivated.  If you have a very good teacher, one that fully understands all aspects of teaching kids music this is even better.   This type of a teacher is passionate; they will see the very first signs of a loss of motivation in your child before anyone else.  Because this teacher is a passionate professional that is highly skilled in teaching kids, he will naturally modify the method being used.  This could be a small change or a change so dramatic that your child will view the new method as totally fresh, thus creating excitement and a renewed motivation in the student.

If you are interested in your child's comparative development with other students, just talk with the teacher.  A good teacher will openly and happily tell you about the experiences of teaching kids music. But the main "news source" for parents is deceptively simple; other parents! Just like when you pick up your child from a little league sport, all the parents are talking.

These parents don't usually know each other outside of the even so the subject is mostly on the children and how they are developing.  This is really the place and time to keep your ears open as well as participate.  Teaching kids music is just like teaching kids baseball, the parents are always around after practice and they are always there for the games or the concerts.

It is a very unfortunate situation if the teacher is not skilled in multiple forms of teaching kids music.  The music teacher could be highly skilled and recognized in their specific area of expertise, but if they are not specifically skilled in teaching kids music in many forms then they will not automatically recognize when a student is losing interest in their lessons.

Like we said earlier, the first person that should see the beginning signs of a loss of motivation or interest should be the music teacher.  If the teacher misses the signs, by the time the parents catch it, the situation may have developed to the point where teaching kids music in a different format may not be very effective.

This can mean slower breathing, slower heart rate, and an activation of the relaxation response, among other things. This is why music and music therapy can help counteract or prevent the damaging effects of chronic stress, greatly promoting not only relaxation, but health.

Music can also be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. This can help prevent the stress response from wreaking havoc on the body, and can help keep creativity andottimism levels higher, bringing many other benefits.

Music has also been found to bring many other benefits, such as lowering blood pressure (which can also reduce the risk of stroke and other health problems over time), boost immunity, ease muscle tension, and more. With so many benefits and such profound physical effects, it’s no surprise that so many are seeing music as an important tool to help the body in staying (or becoming) healthy.

With all these benefits that music can carry, it's no surprise that music therapy is growing in popularity.
